Flexible Ceramic Tiles
Also known as flexible stone, it is a stone-like material rather than genuine natural stone. Made from inorganic materials as the base, it is manufactured through processes including temperature-controlled shaping, baking, radiation cross-linking, and the addition of a structural mesh at the bottom. (Its raw materials are actually similar to those of traditional ceramic tiles.)
Advantages of Flexible Ceramic Tiles
- Lightweight and Thin: Flexible ceramic tiles are extremely light, with a thickness of approximately 0.4–0.5 mm. This feature facilitates construction, helps save building space and auxiliary construction materials, and reduces construction costs.
- Good Flexibility: It can be bent to meet various shape requirements, offering strong adaptability. It is thus ideal for application on complex building surfaces.
- Superior to PU Materials: More eco-friendly and weather-resistant than polyurethane (PU) materials, it is fireproof and not prone to cracking.
Disadvantages
- Durability Issues: Flexible ceramic tiles have a relatively short service life. Over long-term use, problems such as aging and fading may occur, especially under humid conditions.
- High Construction Requirements: Although cutting and tiling seem simple, the material has not yet been widely popularized. Most tilers have little experience in installing flexible ceramic tiles. Improper construction can easily lead to surface cracking or peeling, compromising the overall decorative effect.
- Relatively High Cost: In the market, flexible ceramic tiles are generally priced slightly higher than conventional ceramic tiles. However, compared with large-format sintered stone slabs that deliver the same decorative effect, they are definitely more cost-effective.
- Moderate Wear and Durability: The surface wear resistance of flexible ceramic tiles is inferior to that of rigid ceramic tiles. Wear marks may appear after prolonged use, particularly in high-traffic areas. Their waterproof performance is only moderate, with a water absorption rate of around 10%.
- Environmental Controversies: Despite being marketed as eco-friendly, flexible ceramic tiles may still pose certain environmental risks. (Based on a visit to the production workshop, as someone with allergic rhinitis, I found the environment quite agreeable—there was basically no pungent odor. So it is perfectly safe for use. The environmental concerns mainly lie in the production process and the disposal of waste materials.)
